If there were a broken component inside preventing it from being able to charge, would the machine power on and seem to function normally? I'm looking around to see if anyone local still has this older style charger to test, but if not, I'm inclined to just order a replacement for ~$20 to see if that'll be the last thing this machine needs to be functional again. Regarding the possibility of there being a broken component inside, here's where your experience/knowledge would help. I didn't consider that the power adapter could be broken, since it had been kept in storage for years and there's no external damage, but today I've seen lots of videos of people needing to repair/replace their adapters for Macbooks, so I guess it's a common enough problem. I believed that after the battery was dead, we could still use the machine if it were always plugged in, but that was years ago, and I wrongly assumed that somehow because the battery was even more dead, that that's why the machine wouldn't start up at all even when I recently had it plugged in to the power adapter. For example, I guess this I/O board breaks sometimes? There's a broken/corroded component within the Macbook which isn't allowing it to charge.
This 2011 power adapter (or likely wire within it) is brokenĢ. So from the bit of research I did, 2 main possibilities are:ġ. The magsafe connection is clean and pins aren't abnormally recessed. When I opened it up, 3 cells on the left were all bulging, and once I replaced the battery, the machine started up!īad news: I'm unable to charge it using the original power adapter. Good news: The battery was definitely a problem. If it will only cost you a few bucks, do it. I've already replaced the battery twice (aftermarket). The oldest of my three MBAs is from 2011.

That is, could it be useful for anything, even for kids' basic web browsing, video chat/facetime, and playing around with iMovie, or would all the software I can find say that it's not compatible with whatever OS it has/can have? I believe it was 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion.
It looks like I can get a knock off replacement battery for $30 and up and replacement process is straightforward, but I'm not familiar with Macs, so I don't know if it'd be worth doing. I suppose something else like a capacitor could have leaked in the meantime, but let's assume the battery's the only problem. Years ago when I last turned it on, the battery held no charge but it could still run when it was plugged in. I have a ~2011 11 inch Macbook Air MC968LL/A (A1370), and I'm pretty sure the reason it doesn't work is because the battery's dead.
